March 24, 2012
Wichita, Kan. - What a difference a day makes. Long Beach State jumped out to a big lead on Saturday and continued to push, knocking out 13 runs on 16 hits while Ryan Strufing gave up three hits in six scoreless innings as Long Beach State defeated Wichita State 13-1.
Ino Patron and Johnny Bekakis both had three hits for Long Beach State, while Patron and Brennan Metzger set team highs with three runs scored as the Dirtbags put out their highest run total of the season in a convincing win. Metzger had a single, a double and a triple while driving in three runs for the Dirtbags.
Long Beach State came out quickly, eventually scoring six runs off of Wichita State starter Albert Minnis, but getting three runs in the first inning. Matt Duffy drew a walk to get the team started, and after an RBI single by Patron, Metzger and Prigatano hit back-to back doubles to get the Dirtbags started on the right foot.
Minnis got through the next two innings unscathed, but Long Beach State added three more and the rout was on in the fourth. Jeff Yamaguchi and Bekakis started out the inning with two singles, and after an RBI groundout, Jeff McNeil and Duffy hit two more RBI singles to give the Dirtbags a 6-0 lead.
A leadoff triple from Patron led to another run in the fifth, and Long Beach State added four more in the sixth inning with the big hit coming on a two-run triple from Metzger.
That was all in support of Strufing, who pitched very well while collecting his team-best third win of the season. Strufing gave up just three hits while striking out seven over six innings, walking four.
The Shockers' only run came in the seventh, when Kevin Hall hit a solo home run off of Edgar Gomez.
The two teams will meet for Sunday's rubber game at 11 a.m. PT in Eck Stadium.
