Dirtbags lose 12-2 at Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine jumped out to a big early lead against Long Beach State on Tuesday, scoring six runs in the third inning on the way to a 12-2 win in Malibu on Tuesday. Jeff Yamaguchi had three hits for Long Beach State.
Nick Sabo faced the minimum through two innings in his second start of the season, but ran into trouble in the third inning. Sabo picked up the first out of the inning with a strikeout, but then allowed back-to-back hits through the left side, followed by a third hit to score a run, and then hit Matt Gelalich to load the bases. Turning to Matt Johnson out of the bullpen, the trouble continued as Johnson gave up two hits to keep the bases loaded while scoring a pair of runs, and then hit two batters running to make the score 5-0. Jake Stassi came on in relief, and allowed one hit with the bases loaded, but got Long Beach State out of the inning trailing 6-0.
The Waves scored five more runs in the fifth inning off of freshman Edgar Gomez, as Pepperdine batted around for a second time in the game.
Matt Maurer pitched six shutout innings for Pepperdine to get the win. Long Beach State scored its runs in the ninth inning, with Yamaguchi driving in a run with his third hit of the day.
The Dirtbags will travel to Wichita State for a three-game series this weekend. The first game is scheduled for Friday, March 23, starting at 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
