Dirtbags fall to Oregon State 4-0
March 18, 2011
Long Beach, Calif. - Mike Marjama broke up a perfect game in the eighth inning with a single up the middle, but otherwise Oregon State starter Sam Gaviglio was in complete control throughout in a 4-0 loss for the Dirtbags Friday night. The teams will complete the series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Gaviglio was dominant early, striking out nine of the first ten batters he faced, while he was spotted an early lead in the first inning. Andrew Gagnon was able to retire the first two batters of the game, but the Beavers followed with back-to-back home runs from Andrew Susac and Danny Hayes to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Max Gordon started the inning rally with a walk, and after a fielders' choice, Susac and Hayes got the Beavers on the board again with a single and a two-run double to make the score 4-0.
Long Beach State never really threatened Caviglio, who finished with a complete game, striking out 14 with no walks and allowing just the lone hit, a single in the eighth inning by Mike Marjama.
Freshman Jake Stassi pitched well for the Dirtbags in relief, throwing a career-high four scoreless innings, striking out three Beavers.
Owing to rains forecast for Sunday, Long Beach State will close out the three-game series with Oregon State with a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
