Corder Drives Dirtbags to Win
March 18, 2008
LONG BEACH-- Jason Corder drove in three runs and No. 6-ranked Long Beach State (13-3) won for the 11th time in 12 tries, defeating visiting San Diego State (9-9) 6-2 on Tuesday evening.
Jason Corder hit his second home run in three games and had an RBI single.
The Dirtbags broke out the bats in the fifth inning as an RBI single by Jason Tweedy was followed by a moon-shot of a two-run home run by Corder to give the Dirtbags a 6-2 lead.
LBSU made six errors over the first four innings, but still led 3-2, scoring the tying run on a passed ball in the second, before an RBI single by Corder made it 3-2 in the third. The six errors were the most since the team made five twice in 1999, once in 2002 and six in 1998.
Tyler Topp (1-1) went the first five innings, giving up two unearned runs on seven hits, reaching the fifth inning in two of his three starts this year. Anthony Carrillo, Dustin Rasco, David Born and David Brown combined to allow just two hits and strikeout five. The final trio retired eight in a row until a two-out hit in the ninth.
Jon Berger (1-3) took the loss for San Diego State, as he could not get out of the fifth, as the Aztec pitching staff had three wild pitches, and a balk, and catcher Erik Castro had two passed balls.
The Dirtbags play at UCLA on Friday and host the Bruins in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday. LBSU also hosts Harvard on Monday, March 24 before embarking on a 10-game road trip. The Dirtbags will hit a stretch where they play 14 times over a 17 day stretch.
