Dirtbags fall 2-1 to No. 8 Cal State Fullerton
March 16, 2012
Fullerton, Calif. - Different game, same story for Long Beach State as the Dirtbags got a solid pitching performance from their starter and two hits from sophomore Ino Patron, but were unable to put enough together in support during a 2-1 loss on Friday night in the second game of a doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton.
Long Beach State took a 1-0 lead for the second time of the day in a Friday filled with Déjà vu for the Dirtbags. Ino Patron hit a single, his second of the day to start the fourth inning, and after moving to third on a pair of wild pitches, came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Brennan Metzger.
The Titans took the lead in the bottom half of the same frame. Carlos Lopez started the inning with a single, and after a strikeout, a second single put two runners on for the Titans. Starter Matt Anderson then lost a little control in what was otherwise a solid performance, walking the bases loaded and then hitting Derek Legg to score a run. A sacrifice fly scored a second run for the Titans, which would conclude the scoring for the game.
The Titans had one final chance to add some insurance in the eighth inning, but Nick Sabo was able to induce a double play from Legg to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Anderson finished with six innings pitched, allowing just those two runs with five hits, while Kenny Matthews got the win for Cal State Fullerton, throwing 7.2 innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
Long Beach State lost the earlier game by the same margin, 2-1.
The Titans and Long Beach State are scheduled to play one more game in this series, despite threatening weather throughout the weekend. Saturday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m., and if played, it will be the last of the series. If Saturday's game is cancelled, the teams will play Sunday at 1 p.m.
