Long Beach, Calif. - Junior Jake Stassi threw seven innings of one-run baseball, striking out six, and the Dirtbag bats again came through during the later innings as Long Beach State took Saturday's game with Wichita State 3-1, winning the series.
Jeff McNeil led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field, and came home on an RBI single from Jeff Yamaguchi as the Dirtbags took a 1-0 lead after the opening frame. Wichita Staet (11-7) picked up the equalizer in the top of the third inning, as Dayne Parker hit a flare to reach base, and avoided a tag by Zach Miller at the plate to tie the score at 1-1.
Stassi was in control for the remained of his four innings, getting out of his only jam with a strikeout and a groundout. Long Beach State (8-11) finally pushed ahead for good in the seventh inning, as Richard Prigatano got the action started with a base hit. With two outs, Zach Miller kept the rally going with a base hit, and Colton Vaughn struck a single just out of the reach of a diving Daniel Kihle to bring home the go-ahead run.
The Dirtbags added one more insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Ryan Millison pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit to collect his first save of the season.
Long Beach State will try to complete the sweep of Wichita State in the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
