Dirtbags Drop Another Game 4-1 At Loyola Marymount
March 12, 2013
Los Angeles, Calif. - Richard Prigatano and Eric Hutting hit back-to-back doubles to get Long Beach State on the board in the fifth inning, but the Dirtbags only had one other hit in a 4-1 loss at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday.
Sophomore Nick Sabo got the start for the Dirtbags, pitching three scoreless innings with the help of a pair of double plays, but got into trouble after a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. A sacrifice and a groundout gave the Dirtbags two outs in the inning with a runner at third, but an RBI single by Tommy Cheek put LMU on the board, and a double and a single added two more, even though Long Beach State got out of the inning on the third hit by throwing behind Zac Fujimoto on a wide rounding of first base.
Long Beach State pulled back one run in the fifth inning, as Prigatano and Hutting both doubled to start the inning, but the Dirtbags were unable to pick up any additional runs. A single by Ino Patron put runners on the corners with two outs in the next frame, but Carlos Fuentes struck out Prigatano to end the threat.
Fuentes, Brandon Horth and Bret Dahlson faced the minimum over the final three innings, allowing the Lions to take the win, with Dahlson collecting his second save of the season. The Lions also added a final insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Dirtbags will try to get back on track this weekend, hosting Wichita State for three games. Junior Shane Carle will take the mound in the opener, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Blair Field.
