No. 20 Arizona State Fells Dirtbags In Finale
March 10, 2013
Tempe, Ariz. - Michael Hill hit a two-run home run, the first of his career, but the damage was too little, too late as Long Beach State lost the finale of the three-game series at No. 20 Arizona State 11-2.
Starting pitcher Jon Maciel started off the game well, moving through the first three innings without allowing a hit, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning as Arizona State (10-2-1) took the lead for good in a monster inning.
Maciel got the first batter, but Max Rossiter singled, and after an error put two runners on, a single by Trever Allen put one run on the board. A walk loaded the bases, and a double by Michael Benjamin scored a pair of runs, making the score 3-0. Landon Hunt entered the game in relief, walking two straight batters to bring home another run, and after a fielder's choice, three more singles and an error got ASU to a 9-0 lead before Austin Boyle was able to get Long Beach State (6-10) out of the inning with a fly ball.
Michael Hill cracked a two-run homer to right field after a walk by Alex DeGoti to get the Dirtbags on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Arizona State added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings, accounting for the Sun Devils' final tally.
The Dirtbags will play one more game on the road next Tuesday, playing at Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. Long Beach State will then return home to Blair Field for three games, hosting Wichita State next weekend.
