Dirtbags Drop Exhibition Game to KT Wiz, 8-4
LBSU was playing a professional Korean team for the second time in three years, falling 8-4 to KT Wiz Baseball Club.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Dirtbags took on KT Wiz in an exhibition game on Wednesday night at Blair Field, coming up short in an 8-4 loss to the professional Korean team. Five Dirtbags made their first starts, though not in an official capacity, and Tyler Lawson made his first appearance out of the bullpen.
Lawson was impressive out on the Blair Field mound, pitching four scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Dave Smith got the start for LBSU and pitched a scoreless first inning. Freshman Zak Baayoun also worked a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen.
The Dirtbags had 11 hits offensively but only pushed four runs across. Laine Huffman played shortstop and led off, recording three hits, including a double, with a run scored. Freshman catcher Ryan Mendoza had a two-run single for the Dirtbags in the fifth inning and made his first appearance behind the plate. Tristan Mercadel had two hits and drew a walk, and Matt Gimenez had a double and a run scored while starting at second base.
The teams traded runs in the second, then KT Wiz took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning. LBSU was able to make it a 6-4 game with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but KT Wiz scored twice in the ninth to finish off the scoring.
Long Beach State will now hit the road for a three-game series with No. 7 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Friday night’s matchup is expected to be RHP Darren McCaughan (1-1, 4.50 ERA) against RHP J.B. Bukauskas (1-0, 0.00 ERA). The pitchers were teammates on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer.
