LONG BEACH-- Extra Day? How About Extra Innings? Shane Peterson hit a one-out double to center, scoring Devin Lohman and giving No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (3-2) their second extra inning victory this season, 3-2, over No. 7-ranked Wichita State (3-1).
Devin Lohman, who committed two errors in the eighth to allow WSU to tie it, produced a one-out walk off of loser Andy Womack (0-1), moved to second on a Danny Espinosa single and easily scored when Peterson hit one over centerfielder Andy Dirks head.
Espinosa finished with four hits, Peterson added three.
Nick Vincent (1-0), who kept the game tied in the top of the inning, picked up the win.
Wichita State had a chance to take the lead in the 12th, but Vincent stranded a runner at third with a strikeout and a groundout after coming in for Dustin Rasco. LBSU stranded a runner at third in the 11th, as Tyler Fleming got a groundout and strikeout for the Shockers. Fleming pitched 5.2 shutout innings in relief of starter Rob Musgrave.
Two errors on the same play by second baseman Devin Lohman in the eighth allowed Wichita State to tie the game at 2-2. Lohman flipped a ball to reliever David Roberts on an infield single, that went wide of first and allowed the first run to score. Lohman's throw home then got away and allowed the second run to score.
Andrew Liebel pitched into the eighth, scattering four hits and walking one, leaving with a 2-0 lead with one out. Liebel had a strikeout in seven of his eight innings, striking out the side in the first while retiring the first nine batters.
He tied his career-high set last week, with 11. With two runners on base in the seventh, Liebel struck out Cody Lassley to keep the shutout in tack. Strikeout No. 11 led off the eighth, before an unearned run came around to score.
A leadoff triple by Dirks broke up nine straight retired by Liebel to start the game, but not the shutout, as Dirks was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice two plays later, as LBSU held onto a 1-0 lead early.
A Musgrave wild pitch led the Dirtbags to their first run in the second, before a bases loaded walk made it 2-0 in the sixth and chased Musgrave from the game. He ended up giving up two runs on seven hits over five and a third innings as reliever Tyler Fleming rolled a double play ball to keep it close.
The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday's starters will be LBSU RHP Vance Worley (0-0, 2.57) and Wichita State RHP Aaron Shafer (1-0, 1.50). On Sunday LBSU freshman Jacob Thompson (0-1, 1.50) will oppose WSU's Tim Kelley (1-0, 2.25).
