Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The margin between victory and defeat doesn't get much slimmer than it did for Long Beach State (2-6) on Tuesday night at Blair Field. The Dirtbags had just two hits entering the ninth inning, but had two men in scoring position with a chance to win it. Junior Shaq Robinson hit a line drive to left, but Arizona State's (4-4) Trevor Hauver made a diving grab to deny LBSU a potential walk-off in a 1-0 loss for the Dirtbags.

Freshman Chris Jimenez had a pair of doubles on the night to lead LBSU offensively. The primary catcher also started at third base for the first time in his Dirtbags career. Jacob Hughey also experienced a first, starting as a batter for the first time. The redshirt sophomore who has primarily been used as a pitcher served as the DH on Tuesday, recording a single up the middle in his second at bat.

The story of the night was on the mound for Long Beach State, as an inauspicious start turned into a combined gem for freshman Adam Seminaris and junior Eli Villalobos. Seminaris allowed singles to the first three Sun Devils, as ASU took what proved to be a decisive 1-0 lead with no outs in the first. From there, the southpaw retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced. He worked 5.1 innings, allowing just the one run on six hits with an impressive eight strikeouts.

Villalobos came in and was even more impressive, striking out five batters in a row at one point. He's the first Dirtbags pitcher to accomplish that feat since Austin McGeorge struck out seven straight Nebraska Cornhuskers on Mar. 5, 2016.

In his first relief appearance of the season, Villalobos worked the final 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with just one walk and a hit batter on his record. He finished with six strikeouts.

Long Beach State has allowed its opponent to score in the first inning in five consecutive games, and the Dirtbags are being outscored 7-0 in the first inning this season.

These teams will be right back on Bohl Diamond tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
