Dirtbags drop series finale to No. 17 Arizona
Feb. 27, 2011
Long Beach, Calif. - Centerfielder Brennan Metzger had a double and run scored against Arizona in the third of three games with the Wildcats, but four runs in the first inning paced Arizona to a series win with a 7-1 victory on Sunday.
Branden Pinder had a tough outing in his second start of the season, getting out to a slow start in the first inning. Joey Rickard started out the game by beating out a grounder to third base, and Cole Frenzel followed with another hit to put two runners on. A walk loaded the bases, and a long double by Robert Refsnyder scored a pair of runs. Two more hits brought in two more runs as Arizona took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
Arizona added two more runs in the fourth inning, as Seth Mejias-Brean started the inning with a double, and came around to score on a Bryce Ortega triple. Ortega later scored on a sacrifice fly to make the lead 6-0.
Eddie Magallon was the first of four relievers to pitch for Long Beach State, who held the Wildcats to one run over the final five innings in relief.
Long Beach State got on the board in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a one-out double by Brennan Metzger. The junior came around to score on an error by Bryce Ortega, and the Dirtbags would load the bases, but reliever Matt Chaffee was able to induce a groundout by Johnny Bekakis to end the threat.
Long Beach State returns to Blair Field on Tuesday, March 1 when the Dirtbags host USC at 6:30 p.m.
