Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - Starter Jon Maciel threw seven scoreless innings on the way to a shutout, while sophomore Richard Prigatano was 3-for-3 with both of Long Beach State's RBI as the Dirtbags defeated Valparaiso 2-0 on Sunday, finishing off a series sweep of the Crusaders.

Maciel, making his second start as a Dirtbag, struck out seven batters over seven innings, working out of any trouble while allowing just four hits on the day, while relievers Josh Frye and Eddie Magallon combined on the shutout. Magallon collected the save for Long Beach State (5-3), the eleventh of his career.

The seven strikeouts from Maciel was the most for a Long Beach State pitcher on the season, and the Dirtbags finished without an error for the second straight day as the defense provided strong support for the staff as well.

Offensively, Long Beach State got what the staff need support-wise early. Ino Patron doubled to lead off the second inning, and Prigatano singled to drive in the first of two RBI on the day as the Dirtbags took a 1-0 lead over Valparaiso (1-5).

Prigatano struck once more in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Juan Avila on a double after the senior third baseman had reached base on a single to start the frame.

Long Beach State will hit the road for their next game, playing at USC on Tuesday night before hosting Seattle for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 1.
