Feb. 17, 2017

Box Score

NORMAN, Okla. - No. 17 Long Beach State opened the 2017 season with a 6-2 loss at Oklahoma on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Dirtbags had a tough night against OU starting pitcher Jake Irvin, mustering just one hit during his seven innings of work. LBSU added a pair of runs in the ninth, but couldn't dig out of a 6-0 hole on the road.

Brock Lundquist had an RBI triple in the ninth inning to score Daniel Jackson and get Long Beach State on the board. Lundquist would later score on an RBI groundout from Luke Rasmussen (1-4, RBI, SB). LBSU starter Darren McCaughan allowed six runs in six innings with six strikeouts to suffer the loss.

Oklahoma struck for three runs in the fourth inning as the first five batters reached base safely to give the Sooners a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back home runs from Renae Martinez and Blake Brewster put the Sooners up 6-0 in the sixth inning and they never looked back.

Junior Sebastian Sanchez and freshman Dylan Spacke made their Dirtbags debuts and each threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Irvin was lights out in his seven innings, matching a career high with 10 strikeouts while allowing just one baserunner in the second inning. Once he left the game, the Dirtbags went to work on the OU bullpen, loading the bases with one out in the eighth inning. Unfortunately, a double play ball ended that threat with LBSU still scoreless, leaving the deficit at 6-0 before the two runs in the ninth.

The series was originally scheduled to be played in Long Beach, but severe weather in Southern California forced the series to move to Oklahoma.

Game two of the series will pit Long Beach State senior righthander Dave Smith (3-3, 6.86 ERA in 2016) against OU sophomore righty Dylan Grove (3-1, 3.77 ERA in 2016). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT/12 p.m. PT.
