Long Beach State receives commitments from six players for 2014.
Long Beach State welcomes Jonathan Serven and David Hill to 2013 class.
Head Coach Troy Buckley announces the addition of seven players for the 2013 season.
Jesse Zepeda enters his fifth season at Long Beach State as the lead assistant for the baseball program. Zepeda will lead the offense and serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Dirtbags.
In 2013, Baseball America recognized the Dirtbags recruiting class as one of the top-35 incoming classes in the nation. The incoming class of 2014 received similar recognition from Collegiate Baseball Magazine.
Zepeda came to the Beach after spending seven years as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal Poly. During his seven seasons with the Mustangs, Zepeda helped bring the team to their first Division I postseason appearance in 2009 and was instrumental in the signing and development of two Big West Players of the Year in Kyle Blumenthal (2005) and Grant Desme (2007). Under Zepeda's watch, the Mustangs also had back-to-back Big West Freshmen of the Year with Matt Jensen winning the award in 2009 and Mitch Haniger winning in 2010.
Prior to his time at Cal Poly, Zepeda began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in his hometown of Santa Maria, Calif. He spent the 2003 season there before being hired at Cal Poly
Zepeda played four years in the minor leagues for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays organizations following his collegiate career. He was drafted by the Tigers in the 23rd round of the 1996 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma. He had previously been drafted in the 66th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994 but opted to attend Oklahoma.
Zepeda's collegiate career began at Fresno State, where he spent his freshman season. After one season, he transferred to Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. for his sophomore year. He transferred to Oklahoma for his final two collegiate seasons and helped the Sooners to an appearance in the College World Series in 1995.
