Top Walter Pyramid Moments #4: Women's Volleyball defeats UCSB and sets all-time attendance record
Nov. 12, 2009
Long Beach, Calif. - The Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara volleyball rivalry is as old as the schools, and the 1998 contest in the Pyramid was just another chapter in the long and storied back-and-forth. On November 7, the soon-to-be National Champion 49ers took the floor in front of the all-time largest crowd in Pyramid history at 5,118, and made the Gauchos pay for even coming down Highway 101.
Long Beach State swept Santa Barbara, 15-9, 15-5, 15-6, as junior Anja Grabovc led the way with eight kills and senior Misty May had 12 digs. As if we haven't talked enough about this amazing '98 squad while counting down these Top 15 Moments, let's not forget that five of the six regular starters made the All-Big West first team. May, Grabovc, Brandy Barratt, Benishe Dillard and Veronica Walls all were top selections, and Jessica Alvarado, the other player in the starting rotation, made the second team all-conference list.
A little less than a month later the ladies were in the Pyramid again for the historic sweep of Southern University in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Championships. About two weeks after that, Long Beach took down defending champion Penn State for Brian Gimmillaro's third National Championship. May would be named Co-MVP of the Championship to go along with her AVCA National Player of the Year award.
