Traci Dahl and the 1994 49ers were the first team to play postseason volleyball in the Walter Pyramid.
Dec. 14, 1994
Long Beach, Calif. - There is a long, storied volleyball history in the Walter Pyramid, so it makes sense that the venue hosted its first NCAA tournament match just a few weeks after opening, when Long Beach State women's volleyball welcomed the Grizzlies of Montana.
As a No. 2 seed in the Northwest Regional, the 49ers earned a bye into the second round, where they hosted Montana after the Grizzlies' 3-1 win over Arkansas State.
How did the defending national champions do in their first home NCAA tournament match in the Walter Pyramid? They swept the Grizzlies easily, winning 15-10, 15-6, 15-8 behind 17 kills from Brita Schwerm on .452 hitting. The 49ers then went on to defeat Hawaii before eventually falling to Ohio State in the Northwest Regional Final.
