Top Pyramid Moments #15: Unranked women's volleyball upsets No. 8 Florida
Sept. 30, 2009
Long Beach, Calif. - On senior night at the 2007 Baden Thanksgiving Classic, the unranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team had plenty to be thankful for, courtesy of a huge upset win over No. 8 Florida, 30-26, 22-30, 36-38, 30-20, 20-18.
The Gators were 27-1 coming into the match, but 18 kills apiece from Alexis Crimes, Michaela Hasalikova and Ashley Lee along with great team defense got the win for the 49ers. Five Long Beach players finished in double-digit digs, including senior libero Talaya Whitfield, whose 34 digs were a career-high and the third-most in Long Beach State history.
The five-set thriller featured an incredible third frame, which saw 23 tied scores and 12 lead changes before the Gators finished it up 38-36, eight points over the 30 normally necessary. But the 49ers rebounded to win the fourth set big, and came back from being two points away from losing at 13-10 to take the fifth in another epic set.
