FIRST RUN
The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams returns to the Inland Empire for the third time this season, taking part in the Big West Conference Championships hosted by UC Riverside.  The women's 6,000-meter race is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. (PT), while the men's 8K is scheduled for a 9:15 a.m. (PT) start.  Both races will take place at UCR's Agricultural Operations Course in Riverside.

- Big West Conference students with I.D. are free.

BIG WEST FIELD
LBSU will be among a nine-team field in the women's 6K as the Beach will compete with Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawai'i, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.  On the men's side, LBSU will be among eight teams as Hawai'i does not field a men's team.

LAST YEAR'S BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
The men's finished in fifth place, while the women took ninth at last year's Big West Conference Championships at Kahuku Golf Course in Kahuku, Hawai'i.  Former 49ers
Emilio Nunez and Pauline Mandel were the top runners for LBSU, placing 21st and 36th respectively.  Nunez covered the men's 8K course in a time of 25:57.5, while Mandel finished the women's 6K in a time of 23:29.0.

LAST TIME OUT
LBSU is coming off from a fifth-place finish (13 teams) at the Highlander Invitational women's 5K, while the men's team placed eighth (15 teams) in the 6K.  Senior George Martinez crossed the finish line in fourth among 122 runners in a time of 18:00.0, while redshirt junior Mikayla Florez came in 11th with a mark of 17:47.8.

BEACH TAKES SECOND IN LAS VEGAS
LBSU posted second-place finishes at the UNLV Invitational back on Sept. 23, at Craig Ranch Regional Park in North Las Vegas. Senior George Martinez and junior Mikayla Florez were the top runners for the 49ers, recording sixth and third place finishes respectively. The men's team placed second with 47 points, falling behind team champion Utah Valley with 15 points. On the women's side, the Beach took second with 73 points, finishing ahead of meet host UNLV in third, USC in fourth and San Diego State in fifth.

MARTINEZ, FLOREZ NAMED BIG WEST ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Senior George Martinez and junior Mikayla Florez were named Big West Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week (Sept. 26-Oct. 2) for their performances at the UNLV Invitational. Martinez finished in sixth-place, posting a time of 19:09 in the men's 6,000-meter race. The National City, Calif. native was the top runner for LBSU for the third time this season, leading the Beach to second with 47 points in Las Vegas. On the women's side, this was Florez's second Big West Athlete of the Week award this season after crossing the finish line with a personal-best in the 5K with a mark of 17:49. Florez beat her previous best by 23 seconds. The native from Riverbank, Calif. placed third among 66 runners, finishing nine seconds behind the second-place individual.

LBSU COMPETES IN RIVERSIDE
The LBSU men's and women's cross country teams took 22nd and 16th place finishes at the UC Riverside Invitational back on Sept. 16. The men's team scored 575 points among 32 teams in the men's 8,000-meter race, while the women collected 492 points among 29 teams in the women's 6K. Senior George Martinez led the way for the Beach, finishing in 89th with a time of 25:30.1, while redshirt junior Mikayla Florez crossed the finish line in 56th (21:28.0).

BEACH OPENS SEASON AT PEPPERDINE
LBSU opened the 2017 campaign at the Pepperdine Invitational on Sept. 1, at Alumni Park in Malibu. Redshirt junior Mikayla Florez finished in first-place (14:41.96) among 44 runners in the women's 4K, leading the Beach to five duel meet wins over USC, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, CSUN and CSU Bakersfield. Senior George Martinez finished in sixth with a 5K time of 16:01.83, as the Beach fell in its three duel meets versus CSUN, Pepperdine and UC Irvine.

FLOREZ NAMED BIG WEST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Junior Mikayla Florez was named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week (Aug. 28-Sept. 3), taking home the first weekly honors for cross country. Florez captured first-place at the season-opening Pepperdine Invitational with a 4K time of 14:41.96, helping LBSU to five dual meet wins against USC, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, CSUN and CSU Bakersfield. The Riverbank, Calif. native became the first women's runner from the Beach to win a meet since Rose Del Toro claimed the Aztec Invitational back in 2010.

BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO THE INLAND EMPIRE
After a one-year absence, the Big West Conference Championships return to Riverside, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 28. UC Riverside will serve as hosts for the first conference championship of the year at UCR's Agricultural Operations Course.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
The Beach returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10, traveling to the Emerald City for the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Club in Seattle, Wash.
