A select group of runners from the Long Beach State cross country team will make the short trek up to Cal State Fullerton for the Titan Invitational this Friday, Oct. 21. The women's 5,000-meter race will start at 5 p.m., while the men's 8K meet will take place a half hour later. Sophomore Kylee Martin was the only member from this year's squad to take part in last season's Titan Invitational as she completed the race in 48th place in a time of 19:18.3.
LBSU WOMEN WINS BRONCO INVITATIONAL, MEN FINISH THIRD
The Long Beach State women's cross country team captured the Bronco Invitational team title for the second consecutive year. LBSU recorded a total of 94 points to lead the field of 21 teams to the finish line. Senior Rosa Del Toro led the way for the 49ers, finishing in third and setting a school record in the 5,000-meter race by five seconds that was previously held by Sarah Apgar (17:14) at the 2009 Bronco Invitational. On the men's side, LBSU placed third and was paced by sophomore Heath Reedy, which also set a school record in the men's 8K with a time of 23:50.
DEL TORO NAMED BIG WEST XC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
WOMEN'S TEAM RANKED IN USTFCCCA WEST REGION POLL
Senior Rosa Del Toro was named Big West Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for her performance at last weekend's Bronco Invitational. This is Del Toro's second athlete of the week award this season and fourth overall. The Van Nuys native was selected in September for winning the Fullerton Season Opener 6K. This past weekend, Del Toro set a school record and a personal-best in the women's 5K at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale with a time of 17:09.8. Del Toro's time eclipsed the previous record by five seconds that was held by Sarah Apgar (17:14) at the 2009 Bronco Invitational.
In the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings, the Long Beach State men's and women's teams are ranked at No. 9 in their respective west region polls. Both teams are the second highest ranked school from the Big West Conference as the UC Davis women and Cal Poly men comes in at No. 7 in both polls. The 49er women moved back into the regional rankings after winning their second consecutive Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale this past weekend. crossing the finish line in fourth and setting a school record in the 5K with a time of 17:09. With the win, LBSU finished ahead of five teams that were ranked in last week's west region poll. California was the highest ranked team as the Golden Bears came in at No. 3, followed by Portland (8th), UC Davis (9th), Cal Poly (10th) and Idaho (13th). The men's team remained at No. 9 for the third week in a row after finishing in third (153 points) at the Bronco Invitational behind team champion Stanford (38 points) and Cal Poly (77 points) in second. The 49ers finished ahead of UCLA (14th) and California (16th) as both the Bruins and Golden Bears are ranked ahead of LBSU in the west region poll at No. 4 and No. 8 respectively.
LBSU RUNS AMONG THE BEST AT ROY GRIAK INVITATIONAL
Both men's and women's teams made strong showings at the highly competitive Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24, hosted by the University of Minnesota. LBSU had two runners finish in the top-25 in the men's 8K race with Matt Maldonado leading the way for the 49ers as he crossed the line in 11th with a time of 24:28.5 and Heath Reedy came in 12 seconds behind in 23rd (24:40.3). The men's squad placed 13th, finishing ahead of Washington and Arizona, who were both ranked ahead of the 49ers in the USTFCCCA West Region. On the women's side, Rosa Del Toro paced LBSU to 18th place, finishing ahead of Big 12 Conference members Oklahoma (19th) and Kansas State (20th) and South Carolina (24th) from the Southeastern Conference. Del Toro crossed the finish line in 30th (21:22.4).

Senior Rosa Del Toro (Van Nuys) continued with another strong performance as she finished in third-place in the women's 5,000-meter race at the UC Irvine Invitational. Del Toro crossed the finish line with a time of 17:32.3, leading the women's team to third with 106 points.
REEDY WINS FULLERTON SEASON OPENER, MEN TAKES TEAM TITLE
Sophomore Heath Reedy (Clovis) was the top runner at the Asics Fullerton Season Opener on Sept. 3, recording his first career win. Reedy covered the 8K course at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea in a time of 25:08.4, outdistancing the rest of the pack by 11 seconds. The men's team claimed the team title recording 25 points as four other 49ers finished in the top 10. This was the first team title for the men's squad since winning the Bronco Invitational in 2009.
DEL TORO RUNS TO VICTORY AT FULLERTON OPENER, WOMEN CLAIMS SECOND
Rosa Del Toro recorded her second career race title as she ran to first-place at the Asics Fullerton Season Opener on Sept. 3. Del Toro won the women's 6K event by five seconds recording a time of 22:03.7. Del Toro led the women's team to a second-place finish, tallying 61 points as three 49ers placed in the top 20.
DEL TORO, REEDY NAMED BIG WEST ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The 49ers swept the first weekly athlete of the week awards handed out by the Big West Conference as senior Rosa Del Toro and sophomore Heath Reedywere named cross country athletes of the week. This was Reedy's first athlete of the week award, while this was Del Toro's third in her career as she was nominated twice last season.
The 49ers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, traveling to UC Riverside for the Big West Conference Championships.
