Cross Country travels to Bay Area for Bronco Invitational

The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams travel to Northern California to take part in the annual Bronco Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 13) hosted by Santa Clara University.

The women's 5,000-meter invitational is scheduled for a 9:45 a.m. start, while the men's 8K race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Both races will once again take place at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale.

The LBSU women's team will be looking to capture their third consecutive Bronco Invitational title as they have won the event the last two years. Last season, the 49ers collected 94 points to beat second-place Portland (100 points), Idaho State (116 points) in third and No. 3 California in third. LBSU also finished ahead of four other ranked teams that were ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women's West Region Poll as Portland (8th), UC Davis (9th), Cal Poly (10th) and Idaho (13th) finished behind the 49ers.

Former 49er Rose Del Toro won last year's race with a time of 17:09.8, recording a new school record and a personal-best in the women's 5K by five seconds that was previously held by Sarah Apgar (17:14) in the 2009 Bronco Invitational.

The 49er women's team will be represented by Alisia Barajas, Jessica Barnard, Madison D'Ornellas, Prism Garcia, Taylor Goto, Catherine Martinez, Nina Moore, Michelle Thompson and Alexis Trujillo.

The women's race will feature teams from Cal State Fullerton, California, No. 18 Colorado, Fresno State, Idaho State, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, San Diego, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, No. 7 Stanford, UC Davis and UCLA.

On the men's side, LBSU placed third in last year's 19-team field, collecting 153 points and finishing just behind second-place Cal Poly (77 points) and team champion Stanford (38 points). The Mustangs, were ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA west region poll, and were the highest ranked team from the Big West Conference. The 49ers finished ahead of UCLA (14th) and California (16th) as both the Bruins and Golden Bears were ranked ahead of LBSU (9th) in the west region poll at No. 6 and No. 8 respectively.

Heath Reedy and former 49er Matt Maldonado were the top runners for LBSU finishing in the top-10 and recording personal-bests in the 8K. Reedy finished in third at 23:50.0 and Maldonado placed ninth at 24:10.2.

The 49ers will be represented by Tim Berstrom, Chris Enriquez, Bret Hasvold, Nick Kelley, Jared Long, Arturo Trejo.

The men's race will feature teams from Cal State Fullerton, California, No. 7 Colorado, Fresno State, Idaho State, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, No. 8 Stanford, UC Davis and No. 27 UCLA.

“Santa Clara will be a great opportunity for our team to run at a fast course with solid competition and prepare for the Big West Championships," 49er distance coach Patrick Wales-Dinan said.  "Both the men and women have been training very well over the last three weeks and I know they are eager to see what they can do in a race situation.”
