Cross Country Travels To Sacramento For Capital Cross Challenge

SCHEDULE
Men's 8K - 9:35 a.m.
Womens's 5K - 10:15 a.m.

FIRST RUN
The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams travel to Sacramento to take part in the Capital Cross Challenge hosted by Sacramento State.  The men's 8,000-meter race will begin at 9:35 a.m., while the women's 5K will start at 10:15 a.m.  Both races will be held at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO FIELD
There are a total of 16 men's and 19 women's teams that will be competing on Saturday in Sacramento.  Among some of the teams the 49ers will be competing are California, Arizona State, USC, Eastern Washington, Southern Utah, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Pepperdine, Hawai'i, UC Davis and UC Riverside.

SACRAMENTO ... WE WILL SEE YOU AGAIN
The 49ers will return to Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Friday, Nov. 11, as Sacramento State will host the NCAA Cross Country West Regional for the first time in three years.  Over 35 teams from the west will descend into the capital city to be among the top 18 teams and 36 individuals to advance automatically to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

LATHOS, NUNEZ LEADS 49ERS AT RIVERSIDE
Senior Emilio Nunez and junior Alexandra Lathos were the top runners for the Beach at the UC Riverside on Sept. 17.  Nunez posted a career best in the men's 8K with a time of 24:42.24, leading the Niners to a 12th place (352 points) finish among 29 teams.  Lathos covered the 6K course in a time of 23:25.57 (126th) as the Beach placed 20th (605).


 

 

49ERS OPEN SEASON AT PEPPERDINE INVITATIONAL
LBSU opened the 2016 campaign at the Pepperdine Invitation back on Sept. 1, at Alumni Park in Malibu.  Seniors Pauline Mandel and Kevin Ramirez were the top runners for the 49ers, finishing in second-place.  Recorded as duel meets, the men's team fell to the host Waves and UC Irvine, while the women recorded victories against the Waves and Cal State Bakersfield, while falling to the Anteaters and USC.

WINGET HIRED AS NEW CROSS COUNTRY COACH
Long Beach State head coach Andy Sythe has announced the hiring of Shawn Winget as the program's cross country and assistant track & field coach for the distance events. Winget previously spent five years at TCU where he worked with the middle and long distance runners as an assistant track & field coach. During his tenure, he mentored six Mountain West Conference champions and 34 All-MWC performers. Winget also led his athletes to the national stage as he had 17 NCAA Preliminary qualifiers, including seven who advanced to the NCAA Championships. Two of his runners went on to earn All-America honors. With Winget on the track & field staff, the Horned Frogs won three Mountain West team championships. Winget was also the cross country coach while at TCU. In his five seasons, Winget saw his athletes produce five All-South Central Region honors. During the 2010 campaign, Winget guided Festus Kingen to the first NCAA men's cross country regional title in school history. Kingen was named the South Central Region Men's Athlete of the Year for his effort. Overall, Winget's athletes established 36 indoor and 29 outdoor performances that rank among TCU's all-time top-10, with three being school records.

ALOHA BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2016 Big West Conference Championships will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Kahuku Golf Course on Kahuku, O'ahu hosted by the University of Hawai'i.

WEST REGIONAL RETURNS TO SACRAMENTO
The NCAA West Regional returns to the California capital on Friday, Nov. 11 as both meets will take place at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.
