IRVINE, Calif. - Long Beach State junior Mikayla Florez was named Big West Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

This is the first weekly awards handed out by the Big West for cross country this season.

Florez finished in first-place at the season-opening Pepperdine Invitational this past Friday afternoon in Malibu.  The Riverbank, Calif. native covered the 4,000-meter course in a time of 14:41.96 to lead the 49ers to five dual meet wins against USC, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, CSUN and CSU Bakersfield.

She became the first women's runner from LBSU to win a meet since Rosa Del Toro claimed the Aztec Invitational title in 2010.
