NEW ORLEANS, La. - Long Beach State junior Heath Reedy earned 2011 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday afternoon.
Reedy was one of 58 student-athlete males from 36 institutions that earned the all-academic status from the USTFCCCA and was the only student-athlete from the Big West Conference.
Reedy was the top runner for the 49ers at the NCAA West Regional last November as he finished in 18th place. The Clovis, Calif. native recorded a personal-best in men's 10,000-meter race at the Stanford Golf Course with a time of 29:52. Reedy also placed third in the Big West Conference Championships where he ran to a new school record in the men's 8K with a mark of 23:47.2.
"Heath Reedy personifies the true student athlete," LBSU distance coach Patrick Cunniff said. "We are very proud of his accomplishments. To run as well as he does takes tremendously hard work and maintaining a high GPA calls for great dedication and time management. As our 8k school record holder and a member of both the Big West All-Conference Team and NCAA West All-Regional team, Heath is setting a super high standard in competition, with this award he is matching those accomplishments in the classroom."
"We also owe a huge thanks to Tamika Spivey and the staff at the Bickerstaff Academic Center, for all the work they do to support and assist out student-athletes academically," Cunniff said. "Heath's award is another great piece to a fantastic 2011 Cross Country season and a sign of the amazing things student-athletes at THE BEACH can achieve."
