Jan. 31, 2017

IRVINE, Calif. - The Big West Conference has announced its 2017 Fall All-Academic Team, and a total of 13 Long Beach State athletes have been recognized on this year’s team. To qualify for a spot on the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, complete at least one academic year at the school prior to the season for which the honor is given (at least a sophomore academically), and compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s games.

Three teams boasted four All-Academic Team members: women’s cross country, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. LBSU’s only men’s sport in the fall is cross country, and senior Sam Bautista represented the 49ers with his third straight All-Academic honor.

On the women’s side, cross country had four representatives for the second year in a row. Senior Ashley Carrera leads the way as a three-time honoree, joined by seniors Jodi Lambert and Pauline Mandel, plus junior Alexandra Lathos.

In women’s soccer, Mimi Akaogi and Celeste Dominguez each earn their third-straight All-Academic Team nod, while sophomores Dana Fujikuni and Jordan Sanders are first-time honorees. In women’s volleyball, Nele Barber is the lone senior on the list, joining junior Anete Brinke and a pair of sophomores in Peyton Grahovac and Mykah Wilson.
