Reedy, Del Toro finish in top 20 at NCAA West Regional
Nov. 12, 2011 STANFORD, Calif. - The Long Beach State cross country teams closed out the 2011 season at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday morning at the Stanford Golf Course. The men's team finished in ninth place out of 25 teams with 288 points. Sophomore Heath Reedy led the way for the 49ers in the men's 10,000-meter race, crossing the line in 18th with a time of 29:52. Senior Matt Maldonado placed 57th with a mark of 30:41, followed by sophomore Andrew Garcia in 59th (30:43). Junior Bret Hasvold finished in 64th (30:46) and Jared Long placed 100th (31:30). Regional host Stanford claimed the team championship, collecting 50 points and edging second-place Portland by three points. Lawi Lalang of Arizona won the men's meet in a time of 28:34. Senior Rosa Del Toro was the top runner for LBSU, finishing in 19th with a time of 20:49. LBSU placed 11th out of 31 teams, tallying 332 points. Junior Michelle Thompson finished second for the 49ers, placing 50th with a mark of 21:30, followed by fellow classmate Nina Moore in 77th (21:55). Senior Jessica Barnard crossed the line in 80th (21:58) and freshman Catherine Martinez finished in 106th (22:17).
Washington captured the women's team title with 50 points, followed by Arizona in second with 98. Jordan Hasay or Oregon won the women's 6K race with a time of 19:44. "We’re a little bit disappointed with our performances today," distance coach Patrick Cunniff said. "But we’re really proud and happy how our season as a whole went. Our runners competed hard at a very tough regional. We're very proud of Heath Reedy and Rosa Del Toro being our all-regional finishers and very proud of our student-athletes on how they competed throughout the season." With their finish at the NCAA West Regional, both Reedy and Del Toro made the all-tournament team.
