Martinez Finishes In Ninth Place, Florez Takes 14th At Big West Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Senior George Martinez and junior Mikayla Florez were the top runners for Long Beach State on Saturday morning at the Big West Conference Cross Country Championships, finishing in ninth and 14th places respectively at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.

The LBSU women's team finished in sixth-place among nine teams with 150 points.  The Beach improved by three positions from last year's Big West Championships in Hawai'i with 246 points.

UC Santa Barbara claimed the team title with 45 points as the Gauchos held off second-place Cal Poly with 47 points and Cal State Fullerton in third with 77 points.

Florez posted a personal best in the women's 6,000-meter race with a time of 21:25.4, breaking her previous best by three seconds set on the same course at the UC Riverside Invitational this season.

Freshman Taylor Owen came in second for the Beach, finishing in 24th with a time of 21:47.6, followed by junior Alexis Ceballos placing 33rd with personal best of 22:04.6 and sophomore Julie Vargas crossing the finish line in 40th in a time of 22:24.5.

Freshman Mauren Fitzsimmons finished in 44th in a time of 22:32.3, followed by sophomore Christie Nesbit in 61st with a mark of 24:10.6 and freshman Chloe Masuda placed 64th with a time of 24:10.6.

The Gauchos' Jenna Hinkle captured the individual title with a time of 20:17.1, winning by nine seconds over the Mustangs' Miranda Daschian.

On the men's side, the Beach finished in seventh place with 149 points among eight teams.

Cal Poly captured the team title with 29 points, as the Mustangs held off second-place UC Santa Barbara with 55 points and Cal State Fullerton in third with 112.

Martinez posted a personal best in the men's 8,000-meter race in a time of 24:45.8, shattering his previous best by 19 seconds at last year's Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge.

Freshman Ezra Sotelo came in second for the Beach, finishing in 28th with a time of 25:28.3, followed by fellow classmate Joey Del Valle Rutherford in 35th with time of 25:40.9 and junior Faustino Diaz placing 40th in a time of 25:55.6.

Junior Trevor Stangle finished in 47th with a mark of 26:13.2 and Patrick Burciago in 56th setting a personal best of 26:35.0, beating his previous mark of 29:05.0 set at last year's Big West Championships.

Sophomore Robert Dasher finished in 65th (27:39.3), followed by freshman Logan Schafer in 68th (28:42.8).

Thomas Madden of UC Davis captured the individual title with a time of 24:13.7, winning by eight seconds over Swarnjit Boyal of Cal Poly.

LBSU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10, traveling to Seattle, Wash., for the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Club hosted by the University of Washington.
