Martinez Runs To Fourth Place, Florez Takes 11th At Highlander Invitational
Both runners post personal bests at UC Riverside
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Long Beach State senior George Martinez and redshirt junior Mikayla Florez posted a fourth and 11th place finishes respectively on Saturday morning at the Highlander Invitational at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.
The LBSU men's team placed eighth among 13 teams with 163 points.
Cal State Fullerton captured the men's team title with 58 points, followed by UC Irvine (72) in second and UC Santa Barbara (78) in third.
Martinez recorded a personal best in the men's 6,000-meter race with a time of 18:00.0, shattering his previous mark by 34 seconds. Martinez placed two seconds behind third-place finisher Isaiah Lozano of UCSB and four seconds behind Izzak Mireles of UCI in second.
Nick Heath of Pepperdine won the individual title with a time of 17:49.7.
Freshman Ezra Sotelo placed 34th (18:38.1), followed by fellow classmate Joey Del Valle Rutherford in 36th (18:40.3), junior Faustino Diaz in 42nd (18:46.5), juniors Patrick Burciago (19:02.5) and Trevor Stangle in 77th (19:26.8).
Sophomore Robert Dasher finished in 94th (19:55.2), followed by junior Galyn Nash in 99th (20:10.4) and freshman Logan Schafer in 106th (20:21.5).
On the women's side, LBSU finished in fifth with 142 points. UC Santa Barbara captured the team title with 50 points, followed by Cal State Fullerton (67) in second and UC Riverside (71) in third.
Flores recorded a personal best in the women's 5K, crossing the finish line with a mark of 17:47.8, beating her previous best by two seconds.
Freshman Taylor Owen came in 22nd (18:09.8), followed by sophomore Julie Vargas in 28th (18:17.7) and junior Alexis Ceballos in 40th (18:30.2).
Freshman Mauren Fitzsimmons finished in 48th (18:36.7), followed by sophomore Christie Nesbit in 100th (20:10.1) and freshman Chloe Masuda in 101st (20:18..2).
The Gauchos' Jenna Hinkle captured the individual title, leading the field of 135 runners with a time of 16:48.0., edging Faith Makau of UC Riverside by 13 seconds.
The Beach returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20, taking part in the Titan Invitational at Cal State Fullerton.
