Women's cross country finishes in second place at Bronco Invitational

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's cross country team collected 110 points to finish in second place at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale.

LBSU finished ahead of No. 18 Colorado (6th) and UCLA (10th) as the Bruins were ranked 12th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Region Poll. The 49ers finished just six points behind team champion Cal State San Marcos.

Senior Alisia Barajas led the way for LBSU, crossing the finish in ninth with a career-best in the 5,000-meters of 17:22.7. Fellow classmate Michelle Thompson finished three seconds behind (11th) with a personal-best of 17:25.0.

Senior Jessica Barnard clipped her previous best in the 5K by one second with a mark of 17:44.4 as she crossed the line in 24th, while fellow senior Nina Moore finished in 35th (17:55.5).

Senior Prism Garcia placed 70th (18:17.3), followed by freshman Alexis Trujillo in 83rd (18:25.7), junior Taylor Goto in 100th (18:41.3), sophomores Madison D'Ornellas in 102nd (18:44.0) and Catherine Martinez in 105th (18:47.8).

Taylor Dutch (unattached) crossed the finish line in first with of time of 16:59.1, winning by one second over Courtney Schultz of New Mexico State.

On the men's side, LBSU finished in 17th with 385 points. San Francisco led the field of 19 teams with 146 points as the Dons edged out second-place UC Davis by eight points.



Senior Bret Hasvold was the top runner for the 49ers as he finished in 27th with a mark of 24:39.6, followed by Jared Long in 45th (24:54.6).

Sophomore Arturo Trejo recorded a time of 25:30.8 (105th), followed by freshman Tim Berstrom in 138th (26:20.3) and senior Nick Kelley in 154th (27:55.9).

John Gilbertson of The Masters crossed the finish line in first with a time of 23:40.3, winning by four seconds over Danny Lyon of Cal State San Marcos.

LBSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 19, taking part in the Titan Invitational at Cal State Fullerton.
