LBSU cross country produces strong performances at Mark Covert Classic
Sept. 1, 2012
BREA, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams both opened the season with runner-up performances at the inaugural Mark Covert Classic, which was held at Carbon Canyon Park on Saturday morning.
The LBSU women totaled 48 points (2-3-11-14-18) over the 5K course and were led by Alisia Barajas, who was second with a time of 17:56.1. Barajas finished ahead of former 49er and 2011 Big West champion Rosa Del Toro, and was just two seconds behind Loyola Marymount's Sheree Shea. Barajas took the lead with about a half mile to go and stayed out front until Shea made a final push down the stretch.
Nina Moore was the next 49er to cross the finish line, placing third among collegiate athletes and fourth overall (18:17.4). Michelle Thompson, an All-Big West performer in 2011, finished just outside the top-10 as she was 12th overall (18:43.6). Jessica Barnard and Taylor Goto rounded out the scorers for Long Beach State, coming in 15th and 20th, respectively.
"The women gave a total team effort today and everyone ran a solid race," 49er head coach Andy Sythe said. "We really have a lot to look forward to this season."
In the men's 8K, the 49ers compiled 66 points (4-9-14-17-22). Andrew Garcia led the way with a sixth-place showing, clocking in at 25:39.8. Nick Kelley took 12th overall at 26:07.1, while Chris Enriquez began his LBSU career with a top-20 performance (18th, 26:26.4).
"As a whole, the group really followed the plan," Sythe said. "We weren't too aggressive and were able to build into the race. I am awfully proud of them and we will only get better from here."
Loyola Marymount swept the team titles in both the men's and women's races. Shea was the top performer in the women's 5K at 17:54.3. In the men's 8K, Heath Reedy (24:18.4), who was competing unattached, won for the second year in a row as he finished ahead of the pack as a sophomore at Long Beach State in 2011.
Long Beach State continues its season at the adidas/UCI Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8. The meet will take place at the ARC Fields on the UC Irvine campus beginning at 8 a.m.
