LONG BEACH - Long Beach State track & field head coach Andy Sythe, who is entering his 24th year at the helm of the 49er program, has announced his incoming class for the 2012-13 season. The group includes 10 women and 19 men.
"This ranks among one of the best recruiting classes we have had since I started coaching here at Long Beach State," Sythe said. "The quality of top individuals is equaled by the depth and breadth of this recruiting class. We have picked up talented individuals in all of our events and we are excited to start the new year with this exceptional group joining our track & field family."
Women's Track & Field Incoming Class
Meghan Foley, Jr., Distances (Orange Coast College/Edison HS)
Foley is a transfer from Orange Coast College. She was the 2012 California Community College State champion in the 1500m and also finished as the runner-up in the 800m in 2011. Foley established personal bests of 2:10.47 in the 800m and 4:37.08 in the 1500m. Foley also excelled in cross country, winning the 2011 Orange Empire Conference meet before her season was cut short by injury. Foley lettered at Edison High School in Huntington Beach and attended the University of Texas, Austin before transferring to Orange Coast College.
Taylor Jackson, Jr., Heptathlon (Fresno State/Frontier HS)
Jodi Lambert, Fr., Pole Vault (Blue Valley Northwest HS)
Jackson is a transfer from Fresno State where she competed two years on the track & field team. In 2012, she established a personal-record 4,841 points in the heptathlon, while adding lifetime bests in the 400m hurdles (62.34), 100m hurdles (14.57) and the triple jump (38-08). Prior to that, Jackson was a four-year letterwinner at Frontier High School. As a senior, she qualified for the CIF Finals in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles and 4x400m relay, finishing among the top 16 in both hurdle events.
Lambert was the runner-up in the pole vault at the 2012 Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) 6A Championships. She also had top-10 finishes at the state meet in 2010 and 2011. Lambert left Blue Valley Northwest High School as the Huskies' record holder with a lifetime-best 11-06.
Taylor Lorack, Fr., Sprints (Temecula Valley HS)
Lorack finished seventh in the 400m at the 2012 CIF-Southern Section Division I Finals with a season-best 57.55. She also anchored the 4x400 relay team that placed sixth overall. As a junior, Lorack took eighth at the CIF Finals and notched a personal-record 57.39 in the preliminary round.
Jessica Rotter, Fr., Throws (St. Joseph HS)
Rotter attended St. Joseph High School and was named to the Press-Telegram Dream Team in 2012. She qualified for the CIF Prelims in the shot put all four years and reached the CIF Finals and Masters meet in both 2011 and 2012. As a senior, Rotter won the shot put at the Arcadia Invitational Open. She also won the Del Rey League title in 2011 and followed that with a runner-up finish in 2012. Rotter is a Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame Distinguished nominee.
Linda Rueff, Jr., Throws (Mt. SAC)
Rueff had an outstanding career at Mt. San Antonio College where she registered personal records in the discus (152-02), shot put (42-07) and hammer throw (147-10). As a freshman, Rueff placed sixth in the shot put at the 2010 California Community College State Championships. In 2011, she improved on her finish by taking third overall. Rueff attended Concordia University, Oregon, in 2012 but did not compete.
Jerilynn Stanwood, Jr., Throws (Saddleback College/Trabuco Hills HS)
Stanwood competed two years on the track & field team at Saddleback College. She claimed the 2012 Orange Empire Conference title in the discus and went on to place fifth overall at the California Community College State Championships. Stanwood was also a state meet finalist in 2011, and established a personal-best 144-08.5. She attended Trabuco Hills High School, where she was a first-team All-Seaview League performer and league champion in 2009, advancing all the way to the CIF Finals.
Caitlin Turner, Fr., Distances (Thousand Oaks HS)
Turner competed in both track and cross country at Thousand Oaks High School. She placed third in the 800m at the 2012 CIF State Championships with a lifetime-best 2:09.75, which ranked her seventh in the state and 27th in the nation. As a senior, Turner was also the CIF-Southern Section Division II champion in the 800m, the Ventury County champion in the 1600m and the top finisher for Thousand Oaks HS at the CIF State Cross Country Championships (18:49). Turner's 1600m time of 4:55.81 also ranked 23rd in the state.
Breana Viltz, Fr., Throws (Millikan HS)
Viltz attended Millikan High School where she won the 2012 Moore League title in the discus and went on to place second in her division at the CIF Finals. Viltz was named to the Press-Telegram Dream Team as a senior.
Erica Williams, Jr., Heptathlon (City College of San Francisco)
Williams is a transfer from the City College of San Francisco. In 2012, she qualified for the Community College State Championships in four events. Williams placed third in the heptathlon with a lifetime-best 4,774 points, and scored in the javelin, 100m hurdles, and triple jump. She registered personal records of 128-05 in the javelin, 14.76 in the 100m hurdles and 38-04 in the triple jump.
Men's Track & Field Incoming Class
Willie Alexander III, Fr., Jumps (Central HS)
Alexander lettered at Central High School in Fresno. He was a 2012 CIF State meet finalist in both the triple jump and long jump, placing third and 10th, respectively. As a junior, Alexander also finished fourth in the triple jump at the state meet and set a meet record at the Valley Section finals with 23.5 points. He finished first in the long jump, second in the triple jump, third in the 400m relay and fifth in the 110m hurdles. Alexander ranked 11th in the nation in the triple jump (51.02.75) and was among the top-100 in the nation in the long jump (23-06.5). Alexander served as a team captain and received team MVP honors for track & field. He also lettered three years in soccer and two years in football. He was named to the Fresno Bee's All-Track Team and received the publication's All-Bee Track & Field Athlete of the Year award.
Niko Althaus, Jr., Pole Vault (Moorpark College)
Althaus competed two years in track & field at Moorpark College. He was a finalist in the pole vault at the 2012 California Community College State meet, where he finished third overall. Althaus established a lifetime-best 15-05.
Kyser Anderson, Fr., Pole Vault (Clovis West HS)
Anderson attended Clovis West High School where he was a 2012 CIF State meet finalist in the pole vault. His lifetime-best of 16-01 ranked seventh in California. Anderson was also the Valley Champion, Central Section Valley Champion, North Area Champion and Run for the Dream Indoor state champion. He added a runner-up finish at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays. Anderson left Clovis West ranked second all-time in school history.
Brandon Berguia, Fr., Throws (Arroyo Grande HS)
Berguia won the 2012 PAC-7 league title in the discus and was the runner-up in the shot put at Arroyo Grande High School. He also advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division II Finals in both events, finishing sixth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Berguia established lifetime bests of 58-09.5 in the shot and 174-04 in the discus. He also played football and was the team captain for the 2011 Western Division CIF-SS champions.
Adam Bianchessi, Jr., Javelin (Mt. SAC)
Bianchessi competed two years on the track & field team at Mt. San Antonio College. He was the 2011 California Community College Association Athlete of the Year. He was the state champion in the javelin with a personal-record 218-05, and also placed fourth as a freshman (2010). Bianchessi was the second-ranked community college javelin thrower in the United States in 2011.
Chris Enriquez, Fr., Distances (Queens University of Charlotte/Warren HS)
Enriquez competed one year in cross country at Queens University of Charlotte. He finished second in the 8K (24:36) at the Conference Carolina's Championship and was named the league's freshman of the year in 2011. Enriquez attended Warren High School in Downey where he was the 2011 San Gabriel Valley League champion in both the 3200m (9:13) and 1600m (4:21).
Spencer Gray, Jr., Jumps (Riverside Community College/Riverside Poly HS)
Gray was the 2012 Orange Empire Conference champion and a state meet finalist in the triple jump at Riverside Community College. In 2011, he also claimed the league title in the long jump and advanced to the California Community College State Championships. Gray notched lifetime bests of 47-00 in the triple jump and 23-07.5 in the long jump. He prepped at Riverside Poly High School where he graduated in 2010.
Jason Harrell, Jr., Throws (El Camino College)
A transfer from El Camino College, Harrell established personal records of 166-08 in the discus and 51-08 in the shot put. As a sophomore in 2011, Harrell claimed the South Coast Conference title in the shot put and took third in the discus. He capped off his community college career by placing sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus at the California Community College State Championships.
Devin Hickey, Fr., Hurdles (Vista HS)
Hickey was the top finisher in the 110m hurdles at the CIF San Diego Section prelims and went on to finish third in the finals as a senior at Vista High School. He also placed 15th at the CIF State Championships and took fifth at the indoor state championships in February. Hickey owns lifetime bests of 7.65 in the 55m hurdles, 14.13 in the 110m hurdles and 38.47 in the 300m hurdles. As a junior, he was ranked fifth in California and 52nd in the nation in the 110m hurdles.
Chris Low, Jr., Mid-Distances (College of the Canyons)
Low was a two-year member of the track & field team at College of the Canyons where he won back-to-back titles in the 800m at the California Community College State Championships (2011-12). He was also the Western State Conference champion in the 1500m and So Cal champion in the 800m. Low qualified for the 2011 U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He has established personal bests in the 800m (1:49.13), 1500m (3:49.92) and 400m (47.93).
Victor Martin, Jr., Throws (El Camino College)
Martin competed two years on the track & field team at El Camino College. He placed third in the shot put at the California Community College State Championships with a lifetime-best 53-02.5. Martin was also the 2012 South Coast Conference champion in the shot put and earned South Coast Conference Field Athlete of the Year honors. He finished first in the shot put at the 2012 So Cal Community College Championships and never finished lower than third place among junior college opponents all season.
Dylan McCloskey, Fr., Sprints (El Camino HS)
McCloskey attended El Camino High School where he was the CIF San Diego Section champion in the 100m and 200m as a senior. He also reached the CIF State Finals in both events, finishing fifth in the 200m and eighth in the 100m. McCloskey also qualified for the CIF Finals in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. He finished his prep career with lifetime bests of 10.49 in the 100m and 21.24 in the 200m. In 2012, McCloskey ranked ninth in the state and 74th in the nation in the 200m.
Kody Robison, So., Throws (Millikan HS),
Robison was a team MVP and three-year team captain at Millikan High School. He was a high school state championship qualifier in both the shot put and discus as a junior and senior. Robison also won the Moore League title in both events in 2010 and 2011. He has lifetime-best performances of 166-07 (discus) and 59-02.5 (shot put).
Michael Rogers, Fr., Sprints (St. John Bosco HS)
Rogers attended St. John Bosco High School where he finished fourth overall in the 400m at the 2012 CIF-Southern Section Division III Finals. He clocked in with a lifetime-best 48.35.
Conner Rouse, Fr., Pole Vault (Vista HS)
Rouse prepped at Vista High School where he was the third-place finisher in the pole vault at the 2012 CIF State Championships. He ranked 20th among all high school athletes in the nation with a personal-record 16-03. Rouse won the Jaguar Invitatioinal with a meet record, finished third at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational and was a two-time Avocado East League champion. He was also named the league's Outstanding Field Athlete in 2011.
Cody Smith, Fr., Hurdles (South Torrance HS)
Smith was the 2012 CIF-Southern Section Division III champion in the 110m hurdles (14.31) at South Torrance High School. He was also a state qualifier in the 300m hurdles and finished seventh at the Southern Section Masters meet with a lifetime-best 37.94. Smith ranked 11th in California in the 110m hurdles and 13th in the 300m hurdles.
Davon Wilson-Angel, Jr., Hurdles/Sprints (Merritt College)
Wilson-Angel competed two years on the track & field team at Merritt College. He finished third in the 110m hurdles at the 2012 California Community College State Championships. In 2011, Wilson-Angel was also the Big 8 Conference champion. He holds personal records of 14.21 in the 110m hurdles and 10.98 in the 100-meter dash.
Camren Woods, Jr., Jumps (Mt. SAC)
Woods is a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College. He was a 2012 California Community College State Championship finalist in the long jump, where he finished fourth overall. Woods owns a personal record of 23-03.
Nathan Wright, Jr., Throws (San Mateo College)
Wright is a junior college transfer from San Mateo College. He reached the 2010 California Community College State Championships where he was a finalist in both the discus and javelin. As a freshman, he was also the Coast Conference champion in the discus and javelin and finished third in the shot put. Wright established lifetime-best performances in the discus (165-09) and javelin (176-00).
