LONG BEACH - Long Beach State track & field had six individuals receive 2013 USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition, while both the men's and women's squads were also selected as All-Academic Teams, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
The 49er women had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00, to claim their ninth-straight All-Academic Team honor.
On the men's side, LBSU combined for a 3.12 cumulative GPA and was the only Big West school to be selected as an All-Academic Team.
Individually, Gabe Hilbert and Matt Maldonado both took home their second-straight USTFCCCA All-Academic awards. Hilbert was the Big West champion in the 800m as he clocked in with a lifetime-best 1:48.99. That mark ranks fourth in school history. Hilbert went on to advance to the 800m quarterfinals at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Maldonado finished the indoor season ranked 57th in the nation in the mile (4:01.62). He currently holds the indoor school record in the mile (3:59.08) and ranks second in outdoor school history in the 1500m (3:44.28).
Garrett Demirjian and Michael Vaughan were also USTFCCCA All-Academic selections. Demirjian was an All-Big West performer in the decathlon as he was the runner-up at the conference meet.
Vaughan was a conference scorer in the triple jump and also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries. He finished the year ranked 22nd in the nation with a personal-record 51-07.25.
Emily Cooper and Meghan Foley represented the Long Beach State women on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. Cooper advanced to the 200m quarterfinals at the NCAA West Preliminaries and earned All-Big West honors as a member of the third-place 4x400 squad that established a school-record 3:41.24. She also scored in both the 100m and 200m at the conference meet.
Foley was an NCAA regional qualifier in the 1500m, advancing to the quarterfinals of the West Preliminaries. She registered a school-record 4:23.55 at the Steve Scott Invitational and also ranks third in program history in the 800m (2:08.84).
To qualify for individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked among the top-96 nationally in an individual event or ranked in the top-48 in a relay event; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
