July 24, 2012
LONG BEACH - Gabe Hilbert and Matt Maldonado were named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men's Division I All-Academic Team the USTFCCCA announced Tuesday.
Maldonado, who redshirted the outdoor season, was an indoor All-American in 2012. He earned second-team honors after finishing 12th in the mile run at the NCAA Championships. The Modesto, Calif., native also claimed the individual title in the mile at the MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships where he established a school-record 3:59.08. It was the first time in program history that a 49er ran a sub-four mile.
Hilbert was an NCAA West Preliminary qualifier in the 800-meter run. He also scored and just missed out on all-conference honors in that event as he finished fourth overall at the Big West Championships. In addition, the La Palma, Calif., native was a member of the 4x400 relay team that earned All-Big West recognition with a runner-up performance.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, student-athletes must have compiled a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event, and for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
