Maldonado qualifies for men's 1500m semifinals at U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - Long Beach State's Matt Maldonado finished 17th in the preliminary round of the men's 1500-meter run to advance to Friday's (June 29) semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
The top six finishers in each of the three heats, plus the next six best times qualified for the semifinal round. Maldonado came in seventh in Heat 3 with a time of 3:41.93. His mark was fourth among the next six qualifying times and was 17th overall.
Maldonado, who redshirted the 2012 outdoor track season at LBSU, was an indoor second-team All-American in the mile. The Modesto, Calif., native was also the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor champion with a school-record 3:59.08. He was the first 49er in program history to run a sub-four mile. In addition, Maldonado is a two-time All-Big West cross country performer.
Maldonado is set to compete in Friday's semifinal beginning at 4:20 p.m. The top 12 finishers will then advance to the finals on Sunday, July 1.
