Four 49ers Headed to Iowa for U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships
June 17, 2013
LONG BEACH - Four 49ers will be competing in the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 19-23, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Devin Hickey (110m Hurdles), Michael Perez-Rogers (400m), Conner Rouse (Pole Vault) and Marina Shelton (Hammer) all qualified for the meet, which features the country's top junior athletes, ages 16-19. The top finishers at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Championships will represent the United States at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, Aug. 23-25, in Medellin, Colombia.
Hickey registered a qualifying mark of 14.20 in the 110-meter hurdles at the Big West Championships where he was the runner-up behind teammate Davon Wilson-Angel. Hickey's mark was a lifetime best and is tied for 10th in school history.
Perez-Rogers also notched his 400m qualifying time at the Big West Championships. He ran a personal-record 47.51 to finish third in the prelims and went on to battle through a hamstring injury to place eighth in the finals.
Rouse established his top pole vault mark early in the campaign as he cleared a personal-best 16-08.75 to win the event at the season-opening Beach Classic.
Shelton qualified for the women's hammer throw with a lifetime-best 170-01, which she established at the Beach Invitational. That mark ranks eighth among LBSU's all-time top-10.
Also entered in the U.S. Senior Outdoor Track & Field Championships is former 49er All-American Colin Dunbar (Men's Hammer). Dunbar will be competing for a chance to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships, Aug. 10-18, in Moscow, Russia. LBSU alum Ben Woodruff (Men's Javelin), who holds the school record in the javelin, is also a provisional qualifier as he met the "B" standard.
The U.S. Senior Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 20-23) coincide with the junior championships at Drake Stadium.
