LBSU men's track & field wins Big West Sportsmanship Award
June 14, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's track and field team won the Big West Sportsmanship Award for the 2009-10 season the conference office has announced. The Sportsmanship Award is given to the team accumulating the most votes in each of the 18 sports the conference sponsors. The student-athletes vote as to which team they feel has conducted themselves with the best sportsmanship qualities throughout the conference season and championship tournament. "It makes me proud to know our men's team was recognized for this meaningful award," said 49er head coach Andy Sythe. "To me, the importance of this distinction ranks high, and fits with the philosophy in our recruitment of quality student-athletes. Our staff frequently preaches the importance of a positive environment at the track. It is rewarding to see what we instill in our athletes being projected beyond our team. Honestly, this is a great conference with terrific student-athletes and coaches at all the member institutions." The Beach recently concluded the 2010 season at the NCAA Championships where Kenneth Medwood finished 17th overall in the 400m hurdles. The 49ers were also runner-ups at the Big West Conference Championships. This is the second time in three years that Sythe's team has won a Sportsmanship Award as the men's cross country squad received the honor in the fall of 2008.
