LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team will send 14 athletes to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round, May 24-26.

The 2012 NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round will be held from Thursday through Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. The top 12 finishers in each event automatically advance to the NCAA Champioinships in Des Moines, Iowa (June 6-9).

The 49ers have 17 entries in the West Preliminaries. Chris Lawson (110H, 400H), Shakina Phillips (100H, 400H) and Jacob Weintraub (Shot Put, Discus) are LBSU's multi-event qualifiers. This is the second year in a row that Lawson and Phillips will be competing at the regional meet. Also returning to the postseason are Katrina Graves-Johnson (High Jump), Koree Hines (110H), Phylicia Johnson (Long Jump), Tyler Wallace (Pole Vault) and Ben Woodruff (Javelin). Rounding out the group are first-time NCAA Regional qualifiers Jessica Barnard (3000m Steeplechase), Rosa Del Toro (1500m), Sara Macey (High Jump), Jacob Fraser (Discus), Cameron Glasgow (200m) and Gabe Hilbert (800m).

Woodruff enters the meet ranked fifth in the javelin (243-02), while Lawson is 10th in the 400m hurdles (50.66).

Senior Ben Woodruff was named the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Year, while Jahmani Lockett was selected as the Co-Men's Freshman of the Year. Woodruff defended his Big West title in the javelin at the conference championships two weekends ago. He also established a school and Big West record 243-02 earlier in the season. Lockett was the league champion in the 400m and ran the third leg of the 4x400 relay team that took runner-up honors at the conference meet.

The 49er men finished second and the women placed third at the 2012 Big West Championships. LBSU had 28 all-conference performances over the weekend. Bringing home the Big West title in their respective events were Jessica Barnard (3000 Steeplechase), Chris Lawson (400H), Jahmani Lockett (400m), Jacob Weintraub (Discus) and Ben Woodruff (Javelin).

Five 49ers rank among the top 40 in the nation. Ben Woodruff is 11th in the javelin with a lifetime-best 243-02, while Chris Lawson moved up to No. 17 in the 400m hurdles after running a personal-record 50.66 at the Big West Championships. Katrina Graves-Johnson is 27th in the high jump (5-10.75), Jacob Weintraub is 29th in the discus (183-09) and 39th in the shot put (59-02), and Tyler Wallace is 39th in the pole vault (17-03.50).

Long Beach State claimed six Big West Athlete of the Week awards this season. Ben Woodruff led the way as he was named the men's field athlete of the week three times this year. Rosa Del Toro (Track), Tyler Wallace (Field) and Jacob Weintraub (Field) also earned the weekly honor.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.
