LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team had 16 athletes qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, which will be held May 23-25 in Austin, Texas.
The 49er men, who are coming off their second Big West title in three years, has 13 individuals in next week's postseason meet. Leading the way is Willie Alexander, who qualified in the long jump and triple jump. He established lifetime bests to earn all-conference honors in both events, and ranks 12th in the West Region in the triple jump (52-02.75), and 27th in the long jump (24-07.25). Alexander was recently named the Big West Men's Freshman of the Year.
Jacob Fraser is a multi-event qualifier as well, advancing to the postseason in both the shot put (56-06.5) and discus (179-00). Fraser established his top mark in the discus to win the event at the Big West Championships.
Also advancing to the West Preliminary Rounds are Big West individual champions Josh Villalobos (Hammer), Gabe Hilbert (800m) and Davon Wilson-Angel (110m Hurdes). Joining Wilson-Angel in the high hurdles will be Koree Hines and Devin Hickey. Hines is now a three-time NCAA West Regional qualifier.
On the women's side, Emily Cooper (200m, 23.92), Meghan Foley (1500m, 4:23.55) and Taylor Jackson (Long Jump, 19-07.5) qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries. Foley established a school-record 4:23.55 in the 1500m, while Cooper and Jackson also rank among Long Beach State's all-time top-10 in their respective events.
