LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team has a busy weekend ahead as it hosts the annual VS Athletics/Beach Invitational, April 20-21, at Cerritos College, while also heading to the Mt. SAC Relays, April 19-20.

The 49ers have nine entries in the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays, which will be held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. Rosa Del Toro (1500m), Jessica Barnard (3000m Steeplechase) and Steven DeCastro (3000m Steeplechase) are set to compete on Thursday, April 19, beginning at 2 p.m. The following day, Manny Neizer gets things started for LBSU with the triple jump at 11:30 a.m. Also competing on Friday are Shakina Phillips (100H), Katrina Graves-Johnson (High Jump), Gabriel Hilbert (800m), Koree Hines (110H) and Christopher Lawson (110H).

The annual Beach Invitational will be held at Cerritos College, April 20-21. The hammer throw is the only event scheduled for Friday and begins at 12:30 p.m. The rest of the meet takes place on Saturday with both the field and track events slated for an 8:45 a.m. start. The Beach Invite has grown into one of the largest regular season collegiate meets on the West Coast. There were over 3,100 in attendance last year.

There are also several special events taking place at the Beach Invitational on Saturday, April 21. The 49ers will be honoring all their school record holders for indoor and outdoor track and cross country in a ceremony at approximately 12:35 p.m. on the infield of the track. LBSU will also host the "Fastest Kid in Long Beach Race" for any and all students grades 1-8. In addition, the meet is Long Beach State's Gold Game and Senior Day.

Long Beach State has claimed five Big West Athlete of the Week awards so far this season. Ben Woodruff earned his third honor on April 17, after winning the javelin with a record-breaking toss of 243-02 at the Big West Challenge in Fullerton. His mark was a school, conference, meet and stadium record. Woodruff currently ranks first in the Big West, fourth in the West Region and eighth in the nation.

Jacob Weintraub also collected Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors on March 27. Weintraub won the discus and finished third in the shot put at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational. He is currently tops in the conference in the discus (170-00) and second in the shot put (58-07.25).

Rosa Del Toro was tabbed the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week on March 20. Del Toro finished third overall in the 1500m at the rain-shortened Aztec Invitational. Despite running in inclement weather, she clocked in at 4:29.36, just .32 seconds off her previous lifetime best. The Van Nuys native currently ranks fifth in program history as she notched a personal-record 4:28.44 at the Cal-Nevada Championships.

Entering this weekend, the 49ers have registered 78 Big West qualifying marks. Qualifying in three or more events are Jessica Barnard (800m, 1500m, 3000m Steeplechase, 5000m), Kristen Kiefer (200m, 100H, 400H, LJ), Rosa Del Toro (800m, 1500m, 5000m), Sara Macey (100H, HJ, Javelin) and Jacob Fraser (Shot, Discus, Hammer).

Long Beach State travels south next weekend for the UCSD Triton Invitational (April 27-28) and the UC Irvine/Steve Scott Invitational (April 28-29).
