April 16, 2013
LONG BEACH - Senior Chris Yates (Lakewood, Calif.) has been named the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
This is the fourth weekly honor for Long Beach State and second for Yates this season as he also received the award on March 12.
Yates captured first place in both the shot put and hammer throw at the Big West Challenge in Irvine last Friday. He registered a distance of 59-01.25 in the shot put, which topped his previous personal record by over two feet and moved him up to No. 6 in school history. Yates also won the hammer competition with a toss of 187-09. His two individual victories were instrumental in helping the 49er men claim their sixth-straight Big West Challenge team title.
Yates ranks second in the Big West in both events, while his shot put mark elevates him to No. 13 in the West Region.
Long Beach State resumes competition this week with the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Decathlon/Heptathlon (April 17-18) and the Mt. SAC Relays (April 18-19), while also hosting the Beach Classic at Cerritos College, April 19-20.
