49ers Begin Busy Week at Mt. SAC Decathlon/Heptathlon and Mt. SAC Relays

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team has a busy week ahead as it is set to compete in the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Decathlon/Heptathlon, April 17-18, and the Mt. SAC Relays (April 18-19), before hosting the Beach Invitational this weekend.
LBSU has four multi-event athletes entered in the Mt. SAC/California Invitational, which will take place at Azusa Pacific, April 17-18. Junior Garrett Demirjian will represent the 49ers in the men's decathlon and opens the meet with the 100-meter dash at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Senior Wendy Izquierdo, and juniors Taylor Jackson and Erica Williams, are set to compete in the women's heptathlon which also gets underway Wednesday morning. The trio's first event is the 100-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m.
Long Beach State also currently has 20 athletes (15 men, 5 women) entered in the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. The 49er contingent is comprised primarily of sprinters, hurdlers and distance runners and will compete on Thursday and Friday.
LBSU is coming off a strong weekend at the Big West Challenge in Irvine last Friday (April 12). The men won their sixth-straight team title, while the women finished second. Chris Yates led the way in the throws with individual victories in the shot put and discus. Willie Alexander was also a double-winner in the long jump and triple jump. On the track, Michael Perez-Rogers took top honors in the 400m, while Devin Hickey claimed the 110m hurdle title. The women added four event wins, led by Alexandra Cervantes, who picked up a huge personal-best 175-01 in the hammer throw. She now ranks third in school history.
Long Beach State will host the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College, April 19-20. The men's and women's hammer is set to take place on Friday, with the rest of the events being held on Saturday. More information regarding the meet will be available later in the week.
