Long Beach State Sweeps Big West Women's Track & Field Weekly Honors
March 26, 2014
LONG BEACH - Long Beach State swept the Big West Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors as juniors Jasmine Askew and Tiffany Forbito were both recognized by the conference for their respective performances last weekend.
Askew was named the Big West Track Athlete of the Week after finishing second in the 400m at the Baldy Castillo Invitational with a personal-best 54.72. That was the fastest time recorded by a 49er since 1987, and ranks third in program history. The San Diego, Calif., native was also a member of the 4x400 squad that ran LBSU's first-ever sub-3:40 relay as they shattered the previous school record with a mark of 3:39.65. Askew's 54.0 split was the fastest in the record-setting race.
Forbito earned Big West Field Athlete of the Week honors following a strong showing in the javelin at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. The Oregon City, Ore., native had a toss of 143-04, which is tops in the conference by over 11 feet. Forbito also moved up one spot to No. 8 on the 49er all-time charts.
This is the first career weekly honor for both Askew and Forbito.
Long Beach State has been recognized by the conference in each of the first three weeks of the season as Jason Harrell (March 11) and Kayla Kamaka (March 18) have also been recipients of the weekly award.
LBSU is idle this week and will return to action at the Cal/Nevada Championships and the Stanford Invitational, April 4-5.
