March 18, 2014
LONG BEACH - Senior Kayla Kamaka has been named the Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday evening.
Kamaka, who is coming off a medical redshirt season, picked up an individual victory in the pole vault to help Long Beach State to three dual meet wins at the Anteater 4-Way Meet. The Roseville, Calif., native established two lifetime bests on separate tries, first clearing 12-10.75, before extending that effort with a mark of 13-01.5. That height ranks first in the Big West, second in the NCAA and ties for second all-time at LBSU. Kamaka is just the third 49er in program history to clear 13 feet.
This is the first career weekly honor for Kamaka and second for Long Beach State this season as Jason Harrell earned Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week accolades on March 11.
LBSU is back in action this weekend at the UCI Spring Break Invitational and the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
