De'Ondra Young Named Co-Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week
The junior thrower earns honors after notching a PR in the hammer
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State junior thrower De'Ondra Young continues her tear on the field as she was named Co-Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new personal record last weekend at the Ben Brown Invitational.
Young's heave of 60.57m (198-09.00 ) shattered her previous personal-best mark by 19 feet and six inches. Additionally, her toss was just one-and-a-half inches shy of the Long Beach State school record which was set one year ago by two-time Big West Champion and NCAA qualifier Fatima Vergara.
In just two weeks, Young has bettered her personal record by more than 31 feet and currently ranks third in the country. If she continues on her path, she will exceed the criteria needed to advance to the NCAA First Round.
Young earned the honors along with UC Irvine's Barbara Coward.
The product out of Menifee, Calif., looks to continue to improve on her skills this weekend at the USC Trojan Invite which begins on Friday, March 17 and concludes on Saturday, March 18.
