LONG BEACH - Senior co-captain Chris Yates (Lakewood, Calif.) has been named the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday.
At the Ben Brown Invitational (March 8-9), Yates established lifetime bests in both the shot put and the hammer throw. He was the runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 55-00. Yates' mark ranks second in the nation. It was a big performance by Yates, who did not compete in the shot put last year due to an injury.
In addition, Yates placed fifth in the hammer at 191-06, breaking his personal record by 10 feet.
Long Beach State is back in action this weekend when it heads south to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational on Saturday, March 16.
