Beach Track & Field Set for Pair of Local Meets
Long Beach State track & field will participate in a pair of meets this weekend, with a big squad at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge and distance runners and throwers competing at the Ben Brown Invitational.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Beach will compete in two separate meets in Southern California this weekend, led by a full day of action on Saturday at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, hosted by future Big West Conference rival UC San Diego. Additionally, a handful of throwers and distance runners are set to compete at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton on Friday and Saturday.
The majority of the squad will be in La Jolla, Calif. for the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, the first of two trips LBSU will make to UCSD's campus this year. The Beach will return in Apr. 13-14 for the Triton Invitational.
The action will begin with field events at Noon, and LBSU will have five participants in the women's long jump, representing one of the busiest events of the meet for Long Beach athletes. In the women's hammer throw, Erykah McNairy has the top qualifying mark for the event and is one of four LBSU athletes competing. Similarly, senior Nicholas Hudson leads a group of four 49ers as the favorite in the men's hammer. Junior Josh Carr has the top seed mark in the men's discus throw, and will be one of five LBSU competitors in that event, part of a busy day for Beach throwers.
Senior Lauren Bartsch enters with the best mark among competitors in the women's pole vault, Allison Foster leads all other competitors in the women's long jump, and Reagan Andrews is the top entrant in the women's triple jump.
The Beach will have the two favorites in the women's 100-meter hurdles as senior Elijah McDonald and junior Melanee Williams enter with the fastest seed times in the event. In the women's 400, sophomores Anaya Alexander and Azaria Hill enter as two of the top entrants in that event.
Long Beach State also has three relay squads in the men's 1600-meter relay, with the A team of Kemonie Briggs, Faris Babineaux, Raleigh Adams and Kent Harris entering with the fastest seed time of the nine participating teams.
In Friday action at the Ben Brown Invitational, McNairy, Crystal Rodriguez, Amanda Truong and Brianna Uipi will compete in the women's hammer throw. On the men's side, Hudson, Carr, Tony Sommers and Ryan Coy will also participate in the hammer.
On Saturday, it will be a handful of distance runners competing. Alexis Ceballos will be the lone female representative for Long Beach State, running the 5,000-meter race. Faustino Diaz will run the men's 5,000-meters B and Joseph Del Valle-Rutherford and Trevor Stangle will compete in the 5,000-meters A race.
