Davis, Briggs Named Big West Track & Field Athlete of the Week

March 7, 2017

LONG BEACH – Following the first week of outdoor track and field competition, Long Beach State boasts a pair of Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week selections. Sophomore Courtne’ Davis was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while sophomore Kemonie Briggs earned Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors after leading their respective teams to victory over UCLA in the dual meet to open the outdoor campaign.

Davis, the 2016 Big West Freshman of the Year, picked up right where she left off as she tallied a pair of first-place finishes and a runner-up finish at the dual meet. She won the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 11.69 and placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.01. Both times were faster than her opening meet a year ago.

However, her best effort came in the 4x100-meter relay when she anchored the Beach squad to victory with a time of 45.88, marking the fastest season-opening mark in program history.

Briggs opened his sophomore season with four top-two finishes as he won the long jump with a wind-aided (+2.5) mark of 26-02.75, exceeding his previous personal-best by one-fourth of an inch. His jump equaled the furthest distance achieved by any jumper from the West Region in 2016, including the 2016 NCAA Long Jump Champion and Bowerman Award winner, Jarrion Lawson.

Additionally, Briggs ran in events with three runner-up finishes as he placed second in the 200-meter dash (21.55), 4x100m relay (41.4), and 4x400m relay (3:16.57).

Davis and Briggs look to continue their success this weekend as they lead Long Beach State at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, Calif., on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11.
