LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team continues the outdoor campaign this weekend when it makes the short trip to Fullerton for the Ben Brown Invitational, March 8-9.
BEN BROWN INVITATIONAL
The Ben Brown Invitational will be held at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Track Complex. The hammer throw will take place on Friday as the men kick things off at 10 a.m., with the women to follow. The rest of the field events are set for a 9 a.m. start on Saturday, and the track events open with the men's 400m hurdles at 10 a.m. The Distance Carnival (3000m Steeplechase & 5000m) is also slated to take place Saturday evening with the final heat of the 5000m at 9:40 p.m.
LBSU has 41 athletes (20 women, 21 men) entered in the meet. The group is comprised of primarily throwers and distance runners.
LAST TIME OUT
Long Beach State had five individual victories in its outdoor season opener at the Beach Classic, which the 49ers hosted at Cerritos College, March 1-2. Jacob Fraser was a double-winner in the discus and shot put, while Conner Rouse (pole vault), Michael Vaughan (triple jump) and Dylan McCloskey (400m) also took top honors in their respective events. In addition, the quartet of Jasmine Askew, Emily Cooper, Kayla Goosby and Saedra Wright finished ahead of the pack in the women's 4x100 relay with a combined time of 48.12 seconds.
49ERS SWEEP BIG WEST MEN'S WEEKLY HONORS
Long Beach State swept the initial Big West Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards as junior Koree Hines and senior Michael Vaughan were recognized by the conference for their performances at the Beach Classic on March 2.
Hines was named the Big West Track Athlete of the Week after placing second in the 110m hurdles with a lifetime-best 14.21 seconds. He also helped the 49ers to a pair of runner-up finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Hines is a two-time NCAA Outdoor West Regional qualifier in the 110m hurdles.
Vaughan was tabbed the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week as he won the triple jump with a personal-record 51-07.25. The mark ties him for eighth all-time at LBSU and he also ranks first in the Big West and NCAA West Region.
Long Beach State returns to action next weekend when it heads south to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational on March 16.
