Advocate, Cooks Announced as LBSU’s Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year
Long Beach State’s representatives for Big West scholar Athlete of the Year are Josh Advocate (Baseball) and Riley Cooks (Track & Field), chosen for their exceptional performance both on the field and in the classroom.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Big West Conference announced the 2017 Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year from each member school on Monday, with Long Beach State being represented by Josh Advocate (Baseball) and Riley Cooks (Track & Field). The athletes from each of the nine schools will be honored at a banquet on Thursday, Mar. 8 at the Wyndham hotel in Garden Grove.
Advocate was a key relief pitcher for the Big West Champion Dirtbags last season, leading the team in ERA and earning First Team All-Big West recognition. After the season he was drafted in the 20th Round of the MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers organization, and he is currently a member of their minor league system. Advocate was an exercise science major at Long Beach State.
Cooks was a two-time All-American in the heptathlon at the Beach, winning the Big West title in that event in both 2016 and 2017. She also became the first athlete in 20 years to win Big West Field Athlete of the Year in consecutive seasons. As a student at Long Beach State, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Film and Electronic Arts, Theory and Practice of Cinema. She was also a member of the Dean’s List and received President’s List honors. She is currently training with the goal of competing for Team USA.
