March 5, 2013
LONG BEACH - Long Beach State swept the initial Big West Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards as junior Koree Hines and senior Michael Vaughan were recognized by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Hines was named the Big West Track Athlete of the Week after capturing first place in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.21 seconds at the Beach Classic on March 2. He also helped the 49ers to a pair of runner-up finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Hines is a two-time NCAA Outdoor West Regional qualifier in the 110m hurdles.
This is the first such honor for Hines and the first time a 49er has earned the men's track athlete of the week award since Kenneth Medwood on April 21, 2010.
Vaughan also picked up his first career weekly honor as he was tabbed the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Vaughan posted a personal-best 51-07.25 in the triple jump to win the competition at the Beach Classic. The mark ties him for No. 8 all-time at Long Beach State. Vaughan also ranks first in the Big West and NCAA West Region.
Long Beach State resumes the outdoor season this weekend when it makes the short trip to Fullerton for the Ben Brown Invitational, March 8-9.
